So I started my blog up 6 months ago today so I thought I would do a post about it to tell you guys out there who are interested in starting your own blog and how to go about doing it. And just basically what I have learnt so far…
I have wanted to start up my own blog and an Instagram page for ages and just used the excuse of “I don’t have any spare time because I have a full time job”. WRONG! Im not going to lie to you guys, juggling a full time job and creating quality content for a blog is hard work and you have to really make time and plan things properly. That includes shooting content for my blog on days off (normally the weekend) as well as trying to have content to share on my Instagram daily to showcase it. But if you really enjoy doing something like I have enjoyed doing this, you will 100% put in the effort and make the time. I just LOVE fashion and buying lots of clothes. Thats why I started in the first place!
My full time job working as a stylist/deco visual merchandiser at leading high street retailer H&M has also massively inspired me to start this. As I love all the latest fashion trends and I am that type of shopper that impulse buys and wants it all right now, even if my bank balance screams no thats what credit cards are for right ha!? Please don’t get a credit card I am a bad example and have 100% learnt my lesson.
So how do I promote it?
I mainly use my Instagram for latest outfit posts as well as linking my blog in my bio for people to access it. My Instagram is also set up on a business account which is connected to my Facebook page, where the links for my new posts would also be shared. I do get a lot of views from this Facebook page as not everyone has Instagram (I know what are they playing at who doesn’t have insta these days?!) so I would definitely recommend having your account on business so you can link it. I feel the more active you are on different social networks the better.
I have always loved Instagram because I love looking at pictures. But I’m sure im not the only new blogger out there that finds Instagram difficult sometimes and very demotivating. Thats all because of the general power of social media which makes us compare everything and everyone to ourselves. I endlessly find that I start disliking my pictures or not thinking that my content or feed is strong enough and I want to delete things. As well as thinking to much into how many followers that I have and why I lose them. I do think Instagram does take the fun out of blogging a bit and I’m 100% sure that I’m not the only blogger that feels like this. I just find it a very demanding and time consuming to keep engaging all the time to maintain what I have built but at the end of the day we are only human and I get annoyed at myself when I’m on my phone all of the time. My focus for Instagram is to keep doing what I am doing, not be so harsh on myself, engaging when I can realistically, have a life and a healthy balance as well as continuing to build my followers organically. In the last 6 months I have built my Instagram from 0 to 3500+ organically so I must be doing something right?!
To be completely honest I haven’t been the most consistent as I would have liked to have been recently. I think when you start a blog you need to have a set routine of how often you will post a week and what day and time that will be. Mine is normally a Sunday evening every week but as you will notice I have been posting every 2 weeks or so. Thats only because I have a life and been busy recently which is fine ha. When I plan content I shoot on a weekend if I go out or I try and do a couple of outfits and usually get my boyfriend or beautiful mum to take my pictures. I have used a photographer which makes a huge difference to the quality of your content but that is as and when I can get down to London. I just do what I can when I can, and it also depends on what collaborations I do and what freebies I receive. YAYY to freebies onto that next…
So who doesn’t love clothes? So you will love them even more when they are for free! Yes I have had some great collaborations so far in the last 6 months including my faves Missy Empire, Adexe London, Darphin skincare, Shein official, EGO and many more. This has been super exciting for me and has given me the push and motivation to keep going. For brands to approach me is just so exciting :)! My tips for collaborations is to not jump at the first one, as I have had a variety of small brands approach me that aren’t really me or my style, so I wouldn’t want to showcase or promote something that I don’t really like or feel comfortable in. I want to be genuine for my followers and promote my own personal style. So I have politely turned them down but thanked them for reaching out to me.
And as always I have put the shopping links for the outfit featured in this post (which I love by the way) below in bold. Thanks again guys for reading 🙂
